Restaurant Review: Roka

I just hit a nasty arms and abs session at the gym and am so hungry, so today will be more pictures than words. Does anyone else look at cooking videos/pictures of food when they're starving? Just me? I am definitely going to get a few texts about that one.

Roka Mayfair is a beautiful corner building tucked away on N Audley Street, mere steps away from the bustle of Oxford Street. It features wooden, earthy furniture with a dark yet lively ambiance. It's the perfect vibe for an uninterrupted, upmarket meal that won't take hours. I have been several times, and have ordered several things. Plus, I know my way around a good meal. Below I have listed must-try dishes should you find yourself hungry after a day at Selfridges.

1. Iceberg Salad

Really? A Salad? Trust me, I had the same reaction when this was ordered at our table. I can't imagine filling space on the bill, and my stomach, with something as non-nutritive as lettuce. I am proud to say that this dish had me eating my words, and almost all the leaves. The lettuce is presented and cut beautifully, making it practical to eat with chopsticks. The thick dressing on top is sweet and tangy, so the crunchy square-cut lettuce almost acts as a chip for flavor delivery. Refreshing, light, and easy to share, I thoroughly recommend starting your meal with the Iceberg salad.

2. Tuna Tataki

Now this is more like what to expect from a modern Japanese destination. The tuna tataki features elegantly presented slices of tuna on sliced marinated radishes. A chunky, tangy dressing is placed on top. Similar to the previous dish, the vegetable provides a cold, refreshing crunch to deliver the flavor. Unlike the previous dish, however, is the heartiness of the Tuna. This rich, fatty fish provides a nice chew to sink your teeth into. I recommend this along with the salad, as it is a great way to start your meal.

3. Yellowtail Sashimi

When I first went to Roka many years ago, I was strongly recommended to visit the Mayfair location for this specific plate. These beautiful slices of fish are swimming in a sour yuzu dressing that is so addicting that you immediately want to order another. The yellowtail itself is the perfect vehicle, being delicate and flavourful without overpowering the dressing. My personal opinion is those slices of carrot in the middle can go, but when the fish is gone I promise you will be eating those too for a taste of the sauce.

4. Maki (Assorted)

I guess it wouldn't be a serious review if I didn't discuss the sushi. Being that Roka is an upmarket, modern Japanese restaurant, the maki takes some creative liberties. This doesn't mean that the hand rolls here are crazy like the ones you often find in American Japanese cuisine. Above pictured are the tuna and soft shell crab, which come rolled with an assortment of cucumber, chives, tempura flakes, and homemade sauces. What I like about Roka is that although they have added a signature twist, the seafood still shines through. These are great maki rolls that provide fresh fish, unique flavors, and a generous portion.

Overall, Roka is an amazing experience, whether it is a quick lunch or a sit-down dinner. I would definitely make sure to sample the above while throwing in some Robata meats to round it out. 8.9/10
